we {HEART} nature : Purple Woods Conservation Area

There was (still) ice on the grounds and the temperature was {still!} below zero but we headed out for the annual maple syrup festival at Purple Woods. I guess we were not the only one ....

.... who decided to brave the bitter wind to taste the fresh "liquid gold" on hot pancakes!

The steaming hot apple cider managed to put the smile back on everyone ... yes including ours!

Have a blessed Easter everyone!

Bites and Nibbles @ Le Cartet

Great food + chic ambiance + friendly service = Le Cartet!

When I am on business trip, I normally eat breakfast at the hotel to maximize the time. On this particular trip, I finished all the tasks at hand earlier than expected so I was able to enjoy a brunch at this highly recommended resto-boutique.

The place is still closed when I got there but there was already a short line of excited foodies waiting. Once inside, I  was impressed by Le Cartet's trendy ambiance - high ceilings, long harvest table for communal dining and perfect light giving the place an airy feel.

After minutes of deliberation (there's so much on the menu that I wish to try}, I finally settled for brunch sante: 2 perfectly poached eggs served on top of toasted country bread with lightly dressed mesclun salad,
Cheddar cheese, fruits and dried fig.

It also came with a bowl of to die for creamy Greek yoghurt topped with ginger granola and plump blueberries. I drizzled it with honey and my oh my - the tartness of the berries,  the creaminess of the thick yoghurt, the crunchiness of the flavorful granola plus the sweetness of the honey - that made my day!

I'll be back for sure. In the meantime ....bonne journee!

Hours before drinking Guinness with hubby, I enjoyed my "me time" this Sunday afternoon browsing the new issue of Food and Drink {can't wait to try new spring recipes!}while snacking on green tea cake and shamrock shake.

How could I not take photos of these .... different shades of green of my food and drink!

Seeing Rouge in Grey

When hubby and I arrived here in Canada 14 years ago, Montreal was our first home. We lived there for 3 years and we both fell in love with vieux Montreal. So, on my recent business trip to Montreal in late November, I was able to squeezed in some time visiting this old and beautiful part of the city.

It was grey and very cold - but that did not stopped me to grab my camera and put on my heavy coat and comfy boots very early in the morning. I wanted a quiet time - just me, my camera and the cobbled steps in this part of town. Don't get me wrong - I love old Montreal any time of the day but I've spent most of my time here during the busy hours where the town is alive with excited tourists, locals minding their businesses, restautants filled with hungry foodies eager to sample Montreal's finest cuisine, and oh the night life - that is a different story all together!

But today was a total contrast - the streets are deep in slumber, still recuperating from previous night's revelry. Most of the establishments were still close except for the boulangeries selling freshly-baked baguettes and pastries {this alone justified my being out on this very cold day!}. The silence was punctuated by the sound of the horses' hooves carrying the caleche - preparing for the busy day ahead.

From rue Saint Denis, I walked further south until I saw one my favorite places on earth. Looking down at the bottom of this hilly street, (along rue Saint Paul} there stand the Notre-Dame-de Bon-Secours chapel - so quaint as usual but always welcoming.

Yes, it was grey and cold but this part of the world will always be RED  and vibrant in my eyes!

Je me souviens .....

After the {Snow} Storm

After hiding for quite sometime, the sun finally decided to shine last Saturday so hubby and I seized the day!   We hopped in the car and drove without a specific place to go. We went east and voila ... blue skies and fresh snow providing the perfect background to the beauty of the naked winter trees!

As the sun set, our eyes feasted on a different stoke of colors. If midday was magical and bright, the late afternoon was mysterious and enchanting!

Truly, when I stopped hating winter, I saw the beauty of it.

Vanilla Scones for Weekend Breakfast

Eating breakfast at home on weekends is something hubby and I look forward to ... a nice table setting, simple home-cooked meals eaten leisurely, the aroma of fresh brewed coffee filling the entire house ... ahhh ... pure bliss!

One of our favorite weekend teats is freshly home-baked scones topped with  mascarpone cream and jam . Scones {Scottish quick biscuit}got its name from the Stone of Destiny {also known as Scone}, a place where Scottish kings were once crowned.Although scones are typically part of afternoon tea in Scotland and England, having it first thing in the morning with my favorite tea always make my weekend!

Scones are typically served with clotted cream {or Devonshire cream}but I prefer my home-made mixture of mascarpone cheese, heavy cream, vanilla and icing sugar.

The secret to a crunchy on the outside, flaky on the inside scone is using very chilled butter and kneading the dough just enough to blend.

The moment of truth is when the mascarpone cream melts into the hot scone while the blueberry jam sweet syrup runs on the flaky bread.

Best served with tea or brewed coffee. Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Vanilla Scones
{adapted from House of Annie}

Ingredients:
2 cups  unbleached all-purpose flour
1 Tbsp baking powder
3 Tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
5 Tbsp very cold, unsalted butter
1 cup heavy cream {more for brushing}
1 Tbsp pure vanilla extract

Procedure:
Preheat oven to 425 F (220 C).
Place flour, baking powder, sugar and salt in a bowl and mix. Cut in butter until it resembles coarse meal.
(At this point, you can freeze the mixture in a container for later.)
Add vanilla extract. Stir in heavy cream until it comes together in a shaggy ball. It will still have lots of loose, sandy pieces. If you the mixture too loose and sandy, you can add a little bit more cream to bind it a bit more — it shouldn’t affect the outcome if a bit more cream is added.
Place batter on a floured surface and roughly work it into a ball.
Press the ball down into a rectangular shape.
Fold the dough like you’re folding a business envelope (in thirds, first right fold to center, then left fold to center). Notice that it is still quite shaggy and loose. That’s ok.
Now press the dough down into a circle. Cut it into 8 large or 16 small triangles.
Separate the individual scones and place them on a baking tray that is lined with parchment paper. Brush the top of the scones with cream and then sprinkle each one with a little sugar.
Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown on top.

Marcarpone Cream
{adapted from Joy of Baking}

Ingredients:
4 ounces of maccarpone cheese
1 cup heavy whipping cream
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
2-3 Tbsp icing sugar

Procedure:
Place all the ingredients in a large bowl and beat until the mixture holds its shape and look like softly whipped cream. Use right away or cover and refrigerate the cream until serving.

Kung Hei Fat Choi

Among my cousins on my father's side of the family, I was the one who inherited most of my great grandmother's  Chinese features which gave me the "right" to claim that I am 1/8th Chinese. Celebrating the Lunar New Year is always a part of that "tiny bit" of Chinese in me.

After mass this morning, hubby and I had an authentic zǎo chá 枣茶 {Cantonese morning tea} at our favorite Cantonese restaurant then watched a traditional lion dance performances.

The lion dance is believed to bring good luck and fortune to business establishments, villages and houses.

May we all enjoy the blessings brought by the year of the water snake!

Bites and Nibbles @ Forget About It!

Location : 325 King Street West Toronto
Cuisine : Italian

Last Friday hubby and I together with some of our close friends were invited to a dinner at a place called Forget About It! As a marketer, I will think a number of times before I would consider this name - no doubt the name is catchy but also very risky specially for a restaurant. I purposely did not read the reviews of this place prior to the dinner so I can see for myself why the owner took this risky name ....

The overall ambiance is welcoming. A long bar is the first thing you will notice when you enter the restaurant Since we were a big group we were given the cozy private lounge. Instead of ordering from the menu, our group took advantage of the 3-course-fixed menu for $25. I wasn't expecting much for 25 bucks but the food did not disappoint! The portions were just enough to fill a hungry tummy with flavours that truly  satisfy (the quinoa a-la risotto was really good) . Will I forget this place? Not at all! We had a lovely evening of good food and wine but MORE than that, it was an evening of long-lasting friendship and camaraderie.
